Walter Collodel, Professional Engineer, has been an integral member of the Carson Dunlop Home Inspection team since 2006. Walter is not only a seasoned home inspector but also an accomplished trainer.
Why did you decide to become a home inspector?
WC: “I’ve always had an interest in construction, science, and how things work. Becoming a Home Inspector gave me the opportunity to work in a field that I find interesting. It also gives me a chance to educate people on a lot of things regarding the house as a system — eliminate some of the intimidation that people have about how things work and explain why things are built the way they are.”
What’s the one thing you wish every homeowner knew?
WC: “Homeowners should try to understand as much as they can about their homes. They need to regularly educate themselves on how things work and not be intimidated by technical aspects of the home.”
What is the most surprising thing you’ve uncovered during a home inspection?
WC: “In one home I was inspecting I found that a corner of the foundation had cracked. The house was literally tearing itself apart and sliding down a hill. You could stick your arm into these cracks, they were so large.”
